AND ACTIVITIES FOR CLASS-V SYLLABUS

on British Council Training)
Lesson:
Children of Courage. Bravery Awards
Competencies:
1)
To
enable the children to speak.
2)
To
enable the children develop their vocabulary.
3)
To
enable the children to admire brave acts.
4)
To
enable the children develop reading skill.
5)
To
enable the children develop the skill of gathering information.
Activities:
1)
Warm-up
activities given in the text.
2)
Relate
some known stories which the Teacher / Students have experienced in their
lives.
3)
Introduce
new words with correct word meaning related to the lesson by using
(i)
Pictures
(ii)
Preparing
word cards
(iii) Preparing matching cards
(iv) Conducting vocabulary games like Snap
the Board, Hangman Game, Tick the Correct Answer, etc.
(v)
Frame
simple sentences with new words.
(vi) Ask concept checking questions.
(vii)
Drill the words.
4)
(i)
Read
/ Narrate stories of brave acts.
(ii) Share the ideas in an onion circle.
(iii) Collect information from newspapers, magazines,
cutout pictures, etc. and display on the panel board and discuss.
5)
(i)
Prepare reading cards i.e. stories from the
text.
(ii) Read the text books.
(iii)
Cutout
words of sentences and ask the students to arrange in order and read.

Order
the text by arranging the cut out sentences.
Poem: My Land
Competencies:
1)
To
enable the children develop the feeling of patriotism.
2)
To
enable the children to appreciate poems
3)
To
enable the children develop recitation skill.
Activities:
1)
Display
pictures of great leaders, freedom fighters, historical places, map of India,
traditional dresses, etc. Elicit from children about these pictures.
2)
Read
the poem, pick out the important lines, which strikes the children then ask
them to discuss in group why is it so?

3)
Give
meanings of new words. (Use any activity given in Lesson 1)
4)
Pick out rhyming words.
5)
Write
the poem on the B.B. Make them repeat after the teacher. Rub a few words, make
them recite. Rub a few lines make them recite again. (British Council Training

Lesson: Love for Animals
Competencies:
1)
To
enable the children develop LSRW skills.
2)
To
enable the children develop love for animals.
3)
To
enable them to express the feelings for animals.
4)
To
enable them to comprehend the story and narrate in their own words.
5)
To
enable the children develop the skill of punctuation.
Activities:
1)
Give
the activity to discuss about their pet animals in pairs or groups or whole
class.
2)
Read
the listening text given on Page No. 63 of text and elicit answers asking few
questions.
3)
Give
the template from Page No. 14 ask the students to discuss and fill the format.
Then give them reading cards to correct their answer. (Teacher helps)
4)
Give
meanings to new words by conducting some word building games given in Lesson 1
activities.
5)
Use
pictures of animals in the development stage of the Lesson and elicit.
6)
Sound
and sound maker activity. (Ladder game or miming game)
7)
Introduce
the names to punctuation marks by using flash cards and black board. Give the
activity of rearranging the words to frame correct sentences and put
punctuation marks.
Poem: The Elephant
Competencies:
1)
To
enable the children to appreciate poems
2)
To
enable the children to understand the use of describing words.
3)
To
enable the children to know more about elephants
4)
To
enable the children to recite the poem with expression, rhythm and correct
pronunciation.
Activities:
1)
Introduction
of describing words with examples like Geeta is tall, Ramu is short,
the tree is big, etc. by underlining the describing words. Elicit the same from the children by
encouraging them to frame short sentences.
2)
Ask
the children to pick out the describing words from the poem.
3)
Use
the picture of an elephant and ask the students to describe its parts.
4)
Prepare
reading cards of the text or give Jig-Saw reading activity in the group and ask
each group to read their text and understand.
5)
Ask
the students to pick out the rhyming words and also to frame some more rhyming
words.
6)
Help
the students gather facts by answering the exercise given on Page No. 24 &
25.
Lesson: Fair Play
Competencies:
1)
To
enable the children to develop LSRW skills.
2)
To
enable the children to develop the language functions like discussing,
expressing etc.
3)
To
enable the students to comprehend the text.
4)
To
enable the students to say or to write short essay/paragraph.
5)
To
enable children to use correct form of verbs (Present/Past tense).
Activities:
1)
Conduct
warm up activity given in the text.
2)
Talk
to the students about an interesting match that they had watched on T.V. or that
they had played.
3)
Discuss
in groups and share their ideas about their experiences in games.
4)
Give
meanings to new words by using different activities given in Lesson-1.
5)
Narrate
the story given in the text.
6)
Prepare
a text for reading in sentences and give them to order the text.
7)
Play
the game of musical chair.
8)
Elicit
from children the importance of good values and list them.
9)
Help
students to pick out action words (verbs). Elicit the present and past tense
form and ask them to complete the language exercise on Page No. 31 and 32.
10)Give necessary clues, words, pictures to write a
short essay on school annual day.
Poem : The New Boy
Competencies:
1)
To
enable the children to converse with the teacher/friends.
2)
To
enable the students to express about different situations.
3)
To
enable the children to form rhyming words.
Activities:
1)
Make
a group and ask the students to discuss about their first day in the school
(Write the title on the black board “My First Day In The School”. Let the teacher
share her experiences first).
2)
Pick
out the words from the poem that give the meaning for what teacher gives/acts.
3)
Read
the situations given on Page No. 37.
4)
Ask
the children to pick out the rhyming words and give some more rhyming words for
the same.
Lesson : The Boy Who Save The Forest
Competencies:
1)
To
enable the children to develop love for nature.
2)
To
enable the children to imbibe the values by growing more trees and protecting
our earth.
3)
To
enable the children develop the language functions of interpretations,
expression, imagination.
4)
To
enable the children develop vocabulary.
5)
To
enable the children to write on their own a few sentences.
6) To
enable the children to frame questions.
Activities:
1)
Warm
up activity given on Page No. 39. Reading the text and filling the blanks
(Dicto-gloss activity)
2)
Display
a chart of forest with birds, animals and a few children. Elicit ideas from the
children.
3)
Introduce
new words using word building games like re-arranging words, give one word,
solve the puzzle etc.
4)
Narrate
the story by dramatizing.
5)
Discuss
in groups/pairs the uses of trees and write the same.
6)
Draw
the trees and list out the names of different kinds of trees.
7)
Give
the activity given on Page No. 44 in order to frame questions using who, what,
which, where etc.
8)
Collect
the different headings for the lesson by discussing with the children.
9) Give
them a short paragraph writing on tree.
Poem : Tamarind
Competencies:
1)
To
enable the children to develop love towards trees.
2)
To
enable the children to understand the importance of trees.
3)
To
enable the students to express their feelings.
4)
To
enable the students to write a short poem/rhyme.
Activities:
1)
Ask
the children to describe any tree which is around them.
2)
Make
a list of fruit trees.
3)
Get
a picture of Tamarind tree and elicit from the children its character.
4)
Give
the meaning to new words by using any activities given earlier.
5)
Make
the children to pick out the rhyming words.
6)
Make
word cards with names of trees and asks the students to pick and speak 4/5
lines about it.
7)
Encourage
children to write a short rhyme or a poem.
Lesson : Tansen
Competencies:
1)
To
enable the children to appreciate the musicians and great personalities they
know.
2)
To
enable the children to develop love for music.
3)
To
enable the children to develop the ability to write short dialogues.
4)
To
enable the students to use degree of comparison.
Activities:
1)
A
warm up activity A, B, C given in text (Page No. 50-52).
2)
Display
the photographs of musicians. Help the children to identify them and say
something about them by asking questions.
3)
Write
some simple sentences with describing words on the B.B. and ask the students to
underline the describing words.
4)
Show
some objects or pictures and ask the students to compare them.
[Example : Which is big? Which is
bigger? Etc.
5)
Write
the describing words on the black board with comparative forms and discuss.
[Example : a) Big, Bigger, Biggest b)
Tall, Taller, Tallest c) Small,
Smaller, Smallest etc]
6)
Give
example for nouns (Naming words). Ask the students to work on Page No. 59.
Lesson : Wandering Singles
Competencies:
1)
To
enable the students to appreciate the work of Saronjini Naidu.
2)
To
enable the students to relate the poem with previous lesson.
3)
To
enable the students to use new vocabulary in sentences.
Activities:
1)
Show
the picture of Sarojini Naidu and ask the students few questions by giving
clues. [Example : Who is called the “Nightingale” of India?]
2)
Ask
the students to say few sentences relating to nature, nation or real life
situations.
3)
Ask
the students to collect the pictures of wandering musicians/saints and
introduce them to the class. [It can be used for Project as well].
4)
Ask
the students to pick out the rhyming words and make them frame short sentences
and try to get a new rhyme.
